“Maternal is an ode to Motherhood and what it means to be “maternal.” I explore the physical pregnant form with full torso casts, showing the almost full term growth of fetus in womb. Not only is the form so majestic, it is really rather goddess like, mimicking Greek and Roman statues. Along with the belly casts, I’ve created a mixed media collage of imagery from recycled magazines along with words, paint, origami and fabrics that embody my journey into motherhood and my battle with PPD. The tune of this piece, “Transition Into Motherhood,” is quarkie, at times dark, but at times witty and bright. In addition to these works, I have incorporated drawings from my time at home with Cash this summer and a self-portrait piece incorporating my very own belly cast from January 2015.
My transition into Motherhood was a unique one as is every journey to bring baby earth side. My hope is to normalize, accept and educate the masses about PPD, and, to showcase Motherhood in all it’s glory. Maternal behaviors are often categorized and compartmentalized by non mothers and mothers alike. Something so personal is everyone’s affair.
Thank you for looking! I can’t wait to meet you! Be there, or be square! ✌🏼❤️ #transitionintomotherhood #maternal
