Recent Works by Danielle Urschel and Alyssa Mahern

Show Date
April 4 – June 1

Show Description
Mahern’s series illustrates her psychological and spiritual explorations and understandings over the past five years, including: looking for a home, then realizing that the entire planet is our home; coming to the conclusion that we are one; desire; and finding a best friend.
Urschel’s work captures a glimpse of hope in winter, a single moment caught in moonlight, the infinite battle between failure and triumph.

Show Information
‘Mandatory Expression: Prague’. Photography by Kyle Spears.

Show Date
Friday, April 4th

Show Description
In this exhibit, Bloomington based photographer, Kyle Spears showcases his most recent body of work from Prague, Czech Republic. Kyle says this about his photography;

Primarily, most of my inspiration comes from traveling and discovering new places/things to shoot. No matter where or what I photograph, I want to capture the beauty I see and somehow communicate that with the viewer. As a photographer, I am attracted to the absence of light, just as much as the presence of light. I love how the night can change the atmosphere and mood of a scene that wasn’t evident during daylight.

Tim Lynch “Echoes”

Artist Statement
The collection was created with the idea of what we gather and collect as people, whether physically, mentally or visually. In creating these works I continue to note how aspects of one idea influence another. It also began to cross my mind how someone, like Van Gogh for example…  might have interpreted the concept of an echo. This new set of ideas has been challenging and surprisingly, frustratingly fun. As always, there is never enough time, money, physical space, pencils, paint or canvas.

From my own experience growing up, I collected toys, candy, marbles, more candy, pencils, crayons, records, cards, etc. These items are all physical, tactile, and visual. Adulthood presents similar collections yet often expands into imagery and ideas. For many it becomes a continuum of physical items. And for some, acquiring the candy never stops; it only becomes more expensive due to our continued decadent tastes. In our minds we often strive to collect, be it an atmosphere of calming smoothness or exhilaration.
